Here's a fun test: the next time you chat with your squad, pay attention to what verb tense you most use.
Do you talk mainly in the past tense, referring to past events or accomplishments?
Or, in the present tense, sharing things you are experiencing in the world now?
What about the future tense, exploring what vision you want to manifest tomorrow?
Our go-to tense and how we communicate about ourselves say much more about us than we realize.
THE unofficial question for interviewers is: what is your potential?
Of course, past achievements are indicators of future performance.
But expressing your confidence in your ability to continue this trend in the future is essential.
In interviews, I care less about what candidates did than their capacity to deliver.
The reality is recruiting is about assessing one's potential.
So, if you catch yourself talking about "back in the day" too much, it could be time for a spiel update.
Here are three considerations when communicating your personal brand...
Think of using the present tense and focusing on your current goals and impact, like discussing initiatives you're leading today and ditching the "let me tell you about this big project I did" story.
Sharing real-world examples that show your contemporary influence is helpful, like how precisely you helped your clients solve their problems this week.
Bringing up in a conversation what turns you on professionally, like who inspires you and what values you care about, with concrete & specific names will show you have your ears on the ground and will be more appreciated than any corporate jargon.
In the current zeitgeist, relevance is the capacity to express your distinctive perspective on the world.
In other words, to crush it in the fashion & luxury industries, highlight who you are in the "here and now."
I believe there are no "bad" candidates but rather unprepared ones!
So, to spare the world from any more lousy interviews, I created:
- the Vision Masterclass because the more specific and concrete you are when talking about yourself, the more magnetic you become.
and
- the How to Share Your Achievements Masterclass because the easier someone understands what you do, the better your chances of getting hired.
Speak fresh & keep interviewing :)
